Recognising Indigenous Competence. Advancing Professional Standards.
Overview
The Traditional Health Practice Association of South Africa (THPASA NPC) has established a structured approach to recognising, evaluating, and supporting professional competence within Traditional Health Practice.
This system is designed to honour Indigenous systems of knowledge transmission while introducing a coherent professional framework for assessment, development, and recognition.
THPASA’s assessment architecture is built on two complementary pillars:
Indigenous Assessment Programme (IAP-THP)
Assessment of Professional Competence (APC-THP)
Together, these systems support a developmental pathway from foundational practice to advanced professional mastery.
1. Indigenous Assessment Programme (IAP-THP)
Purpose
The Indigenous Assessment Programme (IAP-THP) recognises that Traditional Health Practice has always included its own systems of evaluation, validation, and initiation.
These systems are rooted in:
- Mentorship and apprenticeship
- Initiatory processes such as ukuthwasa
- Community validation and recognition
- Demonstrated practical ability under supervision
- Ethical and spiritual readiness
- Lineage-based transmission of knowledge
Core Principle
The IAP-THP affirms that competence is demonstrated through lived practice, guided learning, and culturally defined assessment processes, rather than purely formal academic testing models.
Assessment Focus Areas
Indigenous Knowledge Application
- Correct use of traditional diagnostic systems
- Understanding of Indigenous healing frameworks
- Respect for lineage-based protocols
Practical Competence
- Safe application of traditional methods
- Supervised practice standards
- Progressive skill development
Ethical and Cultural Integrity
- Respect for patients and community
- Cultural protocol adherence
- Integrity in conduct
Readiness for Progression
- Increasing independence
- Learning maturity
- Mentor recognition
Applicable Levels
The IAP-THP primarily applies to:
- Level 1 – F-THP(SA)
- Level 2 – E-THP(SA)
- Level 3 – I-THP(SA)
- Level 4 – SI-THP(SA)
At these stages, assessment is mentor-led, community-informed, and practice-based.
2. Assessment of Professional Competence (APC-THP)
Purpose
The Assessment of Professional Competence (APC-THP) provides a structured professional evaluation system for practitioners who have progressed beyond foundational learning stages and are demonstrating independent or advanced practice capability.
Core Principle
The APC-THP ensures that professional autonomy is supported by demonstrable competence, ethical practice, and accountability within the THPASA framework.
Assessment Focus Areas
- Professional practice competence
- Ethical conduct and accountability
- Clinical and traditional decision-making
- Leadership and mentorship (where applicable)
- Documentation and reflective practice
Applicable Levels
The APC-THP applies primarily to:
- Level 5 – CI-THP(SA)
- Level 6 – THP(SA)
- Level 7 – A-THP(SA)
- Level 8 – S-THP(SA)
- Level 9 – C-THP(SA)
- Level 10 – SC-THP(SA)
At these stages, assessment becomes structured, evidence-informed, peer-reviewed (where applicable), and professionally moderated.
3. Certification Pathway
Upon successful completion of the relevant assessment process, practitioners may be recommended for:
- Professional designation recognition (THPASA framework levels)
- Advancement to the next competency level
- Inclusion in CPD programmes
- Specialisation stream recognition:
- Divination
- Herbalism
- Traditional Surgery
- Traditional Birth Attendance
Certification is competency-based, not time-based.
4. Integration of IAP-THP and APC-THP
THPASA recognises that professional development is layered rather than linear.
IAP-THP
Establishes foundational legitimacy through Indigenous systems.
APC-THP
Establishes professional accountability and advanced competence.
Together, they create a continuum of professional development that respects Indigenous knowledge systems while introducing structured professional recognition.
5. Important Notice
The Indigenous Assessment Programme (IAP-THP) and the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC-THP) are internal professional development and competency recognition systems developed by THPASA NPC.
They do not constitute SAQA-accredited qualifications or statutory registration frameworks at this stage.
THPASA NPC operates lawfully within the Republic of South Africa as a non-profit organisation engaged in sector development, professionalisation support, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems advancement.
The organisation is in a developmental phase toward formal recognition and is actively building institutional capacity, governance systems, and regulatory engagement processes required for future alignment with statutory and national qualification frameworks.
Where necessary, THPASA will engage relevant statutory bodies and obtain appropriate permissions or recognitions to support its long-term professionalisation objectives.
Closing Statement
THPASA is committed to ensuring that Traditional Health Practice is recognised not only as a cultural heritage system, but as a structured, ethical, and evolving profession grounded in Indigenous knowledge and supported by rigorous competency development.
